Hello Friends, you know raising a family is a huge responsibility. Financial pressures, responsibilities, and the daily errands that comes from life can wear on a person. When you start a family, you begin to see things in a whole new light. You suddenly become aware of how small your apartment is and say “Honey, do you think we’ll have room?” World events take on new meaning and matter much more to you.
You never realized how competitive the human spirit was until you stepped foot on the grass of a little league field. (And I’m not referring to the children.) 🙂 As your children get older you begin to ask, “Why aren’t they listening to me?” or “What college are they going to go to and why is it so expensive?” Through all of this you do your best to maintain a stable environment at home giving them healthy balanced meals with fresh vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and healthy fats providing a variety of home cooked cuisine. You try to stay on top of house-keeping, paying the bills and running the laundry. .. ok, so perhaps managing your family is like running a serious business. But that doesn’t mean you have to be serious too.
Running a household is serious work, however you don’t need to be a sourpuss. Being disciplined and having a grateful attitude are two completely different things. You can teach your children to be responsible and to have fun in the process. Learn to add some recreation into your family activities. The term “recreate” originates from the Latin language which means “to give new life” ; “to refresh.”
When you recreate, you literally “create anew.” Recreation involves diverting yourself from the everyday and the mundane for the purpose of revitalizing your interest in life, in each other, and in God. And friends, it doesn’t have to be expensive! Too many people think that they need to pay tons of money on fancy sports equipement or elaborate vacations in order to have fun. When you just get outside and enjoy the beauty of God’s natural creation, He is delighted! And, the research shows that it is calming to your mood and boosts those good feelings.
God made it all and to Him every detail is “excellent in every way” (Genesis 1:31). So take some time and go outside for a walk, a hike or maybe even golf with your family. Treat your family to some of the simple pleasures of life and allow your spirit to be renewed in the process. You can find some deals on Groupon.com
Remember, it’s ok, even admirable, to relax alone from time to time as long as you do things with your family as well. We are created for community and we need each other. There are two different types of recreation – planned and spontaneous – make time for both of them because when it comes to recreation, the best things in life sometimes sneak up on you and are usually free (or at least relatively inexpensive). Lastly, don’t take your recreation too seriously – whatever it is. For pete’s sake, it’s just a game! You’re not playing the PGA golf tournament. Sheez! Have fun and relax… Remember this is a time for connecting with God, others, and recharging your batteries.
“in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18
