We humans are good at making rules. Our country has rules, our states and cities have rules, and even families make their own rules. Deciding on the rules is not the problem, but keeping them is. The same thing could be said about values. There is no shortage of discussion about them. But talking about them isn’t doing much good. The problem is living them.
Friends, God’s gives you His laws/guidelines because He loves us. In other words, His laws are for YOU! Everything that God tells us in His word is better than what our finite brain can even fathom!
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9
Yet we often treat His laws as mere “suggestions.” For example, God tells us that He designed sex for marriage between a man and woman. Yet look at what society has done. When His laws are violated via premarital sex, homosexuality, adultery and multiple sexual partners, the natural consequences are AIDS, fatherless children, abortion, broken homes, single parent families, alcoholism, drug dependency, violence, joblessness and early death. Truth.
Now imagine if we took treated man’s laws like we did God’s – as a mere “suggestion.” Let’s take a simple stop sign as an example. Let’s say you pull up to a stop sign and you stop, but 45% of the population don’t want to stop. Some decide to do the “California roll” (which is slow down but not fully stop), while others completely keep driving through it and ignore it. Can you imagine the catastrophe? It would be no one’s fault but their own. They foolishly ignored the law and either lost their lives, maimed another, or took the life of himself and other.
Yet this is what we do when we ignore what God tells us in His word. How foolish we are!
Society’s set of principles stops at your door and allows you to do whatever you want in your private life. God wants you to live according to His holiness, and He wants you to apply that standard to both your private and public life.
“God has called us to be holy, not to live impure lives. Anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human rules but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.” 1 Thessalonians 4:7-8
Everyday is a gift from our Creator, complete with it’s assortment of ups and downs. It will contain many teachable moments from the Holy Spirit – yet the question for you is… are you listening? Everyday offers another opportunity for you to give God thanks for the blessings that He has given you!
